My Vacation
On Thursday June 25th 2009
I went camping, we went to Assateague Island. We went to the beach every day we were there. It was awesome! I don't think I have been to the beach that many days in a row! My Aunt and Uncle came too with their kids, it was really fun! On the 2nd to last day on the beach Me, Kai, Sarah-Grace,Jonathan,Uncle Dana, Ryan,Tim, + Annie, all played Scrabble. It was really fun, Ryan and Tim were on a team.....And won, Sadly. One night when we all went to bed my dad accidently left the light on, and all the mosquitos came in. (There was also a whole in the screen door). That night Erin and I got bitten by sooooo many mosquitos! When I woke up I looked at my hands and I saw these weird purple dots. So, I showed my mom and she didn't know what the heck they were, so she and I went over to my Aunt and Uncles campsite to ask them if they knew what I had on my hands. And they said bug bites. The same day I looked in the mirror and they were on my face! (they weren't itchy) And when Erin woke up I told her that they were on her face (it was true) this is what i said: "Erin do you see my hands and the weird purple dots on them?" Erin: "yeah" Me: "Their on your face" Erin was horrified. It was actually kinda funny. And now their still on my hands and face, and their really itchy, but only on my hands! And Erin is trying to cover them on with make-up :D

Anyway, I haven't posted in a while, and most every time I do post the post it's a picture of a frog and I decided that it's getting boring to just look at pictures of frogs....Today I don't know what to post, so if you would comment and tell me an idea for a post that would be awesommmmmme!! :]
(so today I'm going to post a picture of a frog but it's going to have a fact to...I'm posting this because I have no ideas, but when I get comments on what to post I won't post boring pictures of frogs anymore)
Frogs are important to human beings. They are a source of food in some countries. They eat insects, some of which are serious pests. We use them for medical research to test for new drugs and students dissect them to learn about anatomy. They are also part of the eco-system which means that whatever happens to them will affect other animals and even us in different ways. We are all connected in the web of life.

Frog of the Month (MAY)
The frog of the month for May is: Hyla Ebbraccata
( this frog is from the 300 frogs book.. from the library. its not the exact same picture. but its the same frog..)
Hyla Ebbraccata is relatively common in the humid tropical forests of South America including southern Mexico, Costa Rica, and Columbia. It is less common is Ecuador.

CHARACTERISTICS
Frogs have very good eyesight. They bulge out the sides of their heads in order for the frog to see in nearly all directions.
Frogs also have amazing sense of hearing. You can often tell the difference between a male and female frog by the size of their eardrum, which can be seen behind their eyes. If the eardrum is smaller than the eye, the frog is a female. On males their eardrum is the same size as the eye.
Frogs have very powerful back legs and webbed feet that help them jump great distances, as well as, swim. Frogs even use their legs to dig, or burrow, underground for hibernating. Certain frogs can jump up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap.
Every different species of frog has his or her own look. They come in many colors, patterns and sizes.

Frog of the Month! The Blue Poison Dart Frog
And here's a poem that was in The Ranger Rick Magazine.
PRETTY POISON
Brown with oval orange spots. Crimson mottled black with blots. Neon green with blue-black bands. Tangerine with lemon strands. Banana yellow. Ultramarine almost any color seen. And though their poison can tip a dart. These frogs Masters of Fine Art.

Watch out! Don't touch that toxic terror above. You can tell by the bright warning colors that it's poisonous, right? Wrong! The painted Antnest Frog only appears to be a poison frog at first glance. What's up with that? It's called mimicry. In other words one kind of frog mimics, or looks like, another kind of frog. Let's say that a hungry predator has a bad experience with the poisonous one. It will also avoid the non-poisonous one. It won't have idea which is which. The safe frog didn't come to look like the poison frog overnight. It took many generations. And now it's as if the frog is living a lie and getting away with it.
(from Ranger Rick magazine)
(there obviously isn't a whole picture of the frog but, that's what the back part of it looks like)

Toads often have puffy looking pockets called paratoid glands located behind the ear that squirt poison at potential predators. So, if you've ever hear a dog "scream" after picking up an American Toad, now you know what happened!
Although frogs have poisonous skin glands, these toxins do not usually protect them from predatory mammals, birds, and snakes. Edible anurans have to rely on more than just poison glands which tend to work too late (i.e. after the predator has it in his mouth!)Monday, February 23, 2009

my, what bid ears you have
Frogs can hear using big round ears on the sides of their head called a tympanum. Tympanum means drum. The size and distance between the ears depends on the wavelength and frequency of a male frogs call. On some frogs, the ear is very hard to see!
Ever wonder how frogs that can get so LOUD manage not to hurt their own ears? Some frogs make so much noise that they can be heard for miles! How do they keep from blowing out their own eardrums?
Well, actually, frogs have special ears that are connected to their lungs. When they hear noises, not only does the eardrum vibrate, but the lung does too! Scientists think that this special pressure system is what keeps frogs from hurting themselves with their noisy calls!

Ten new species of amphibian discovered in Colombia. But, only five pictures

Click on its picture to read more about this weird frog.
Yep...that's a baby frog coming out of a tiny mama frogs' mouth.
This species of frog, called the Gastric Brooding Frog, incubates its' young inside it's tummy...then the frogs come hopping out of the mouth when they develop past the tadpole stage. Scientists were most intrigued by how this species manages to "Turn off" production of hydrochloric acid (the digestive juices) when brooding the froglets.
The Gastric Brooding Frog was found in Australia. Sadly, not long after their discovery they dissapeared and are now believed to be extinct.
Also- Yes! That is a thumb you see behind the frog, to show how tiny even the mama is.

Our wonderful froggie friends are disappearing :(
All is not well on the environmental front!
About 5 years ago, the environment was one of the more important issues in the media. Everywhere you turned: TV, the radio, the papers- the disappearance of rain forests in the Amazon and Brazil were one of the hottest topics around. The public attention actually helped, for a while - the rate at which acres of forest were disappearing slowed. But soon, interest in the media cooled off and now we hardly ever hear about this problem anymore. The worst part of it is, after the media craze died down, the problem has gotten EVEN WORSE than it was before, tropical forests disappearing at approximately one per cent every year!
An Amazon Study Released on January 26, 1998 shows that Brazil's Amazon rain forest continues to be ravaged at an alarming rate, according to a National Space Research Institute study. Satellite images showed some 22,600 square miles of rain forest were slashed, burned and cleared between 1995 and 1997!
At the same time, new studies have shown that America's National Parks a increasingly showing effects of Global Warming. If we don't start taking action, the consequences could be devastating!
Meanwhile, things are looking grim on the political front as well. In Rio, the second Earth Summit was held to evaluate the progress on where the world stands from promises made at the last summit 5 years ago in 1992. The International community pretty much failed on ALL counts...leaving many with a feeling that the whole thing was pretty much a waste of time.
Because they are so sensitive to environmental changes, Frogs represent to humans a sort of ecological "Canary in a Coalmine." The rapid disappearance of many species of frogs is a sure sign that something is going very very wrong on our planet.

a long long time ago
The earliest known frog appeared during the late Jurassic period, about 190 million years ago! Scientists believe that the oldest frogs developed jumping legs to avoid being eaten by dinosaurs.
Specimens on the first known frogs have been found on Navajo Indian reservations in Arizona. Fossils of meat-eating fish and reptiles such as dinosaurs have also been found at the same site.
These fossils show that the skeletal shape and body plan of the frog has remained almost unchanged over the last 190 million years. In addition, frogs had the added advantage of being small enough to be able to hop away to avoid the many predators which habitated its surroundings."
(the picture obviously isn't a picture of a dinosaur and a frog but it's kinda like big thing and little thing haha so I thought i could post it with the fact!

Inertesting Facts
Did you know that a group of frogs is called an ‘army’?
(A group of toads is called a ‘knot’.)
Frogs don’t drink water they absorb it through their skin.
Frog bones form a ring when the frog is hibernating, just like trees do. Scientists can use these rings to figure out the age of a frog.
FROG SPECIES
There are many different species of frogs. They are found in almost every climate and all over the world except for Antarctica. Here are some examples:
1.Darwin's Frog
2.Goliath Frog
3.Northern Leopard Frog
4.Ornate Horned Frog
5.Poison Dart Frog
6.Wood Frogs

Psaml 103
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits-
3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The LORD works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are like grass,
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
the LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children's children-
18 with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.
19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
who obey his word.
21 Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.
22 Praise the LORD, all his works
everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.
